Cupcakes are all the rage these days for birthday parties, and there are several reasons why. First, it’s a single portion. Everybody gets one, and you know how many to order based on your guest list. Secondly, all the birthday cupcakes are exactly the same so there is no complaining about getting a bigger piece or more icing. Finally, they are way less messy than traditional cake. No cutting, putting on plates, passing out forks. It’s simple just place the cupcake on a plate and go. In a pinch, you wouldn’t even need the plates!
Now, you will need something to dress those birthday cupcakes up a bit. Enter cupcake toppers! These are all the rage too because they can be personalized and made to match your party. You can choose a single design or a few different designs. Cupcake toppers will definitely add a custom touch to your birthday party.
Designing Cupcake Toppers
I try to design 3 to 4 different options for cupcake toppers. I almost always include the age of the birthday kiddo and either their name or monogram depending on the party theme. Sometimes, I will do both! I also try to have one or two with a picture/object that fits the theme. I also add the colors to match the birthday party theme, but those are always adjustable. And sometimes the exact colors are hard to show in the design program...for example glitter card stock!
Then, I send a screenshot to the customer, and ask for feedback, changes, etc. If they request color changes or design changes, I will send them another screenshot just to make sure it’s exactly what they want. They have the option to choose just one design or a mix of all 3 or 4 to complete the dozen birthday cupcake toppers.
Putting it All Together
After the customer approves the final designs, I start the work! It’s actually not too bad, most of the work is done in the design process. Now, it’s simply printing, cutting and assembling. I like to get everything printed and cut before I actually assemble the cupcake toppers. I’m sure others assemble as they go, but this works for me. I also like using the double-sided foam tape if the birthday cupcake topper design has two layers. It adds depth to the cupcake topper. The final step is gluing on toothpicks so they can be inserted into the birthday cupcakes. The assembly process is usually pretty quick, and it’s just a matter of waiting for the glue to dry!
