Traditional birthday parties aren’t always for everyone. Some parents don’t have the time or money for planning a traditional birthday party. Others are looking for an alternative birthday celebration to keep their kids safe. However, that doesn’t mean you shouldn't celebrate the birthday girl or boy! There are plenty of fun things to do on your birthday. Check out these alternative birthday celebrations!
*A Yes Day
Yes, it’s exactly what it sounds like. You say yes to every question or request from your kiddo. With teenagers, this might be a little scary, and you’d need to set some limits. However, with elementary age kids, this means donuts for breakfast and video games all day!
*Celebrate with Close Friends and Family
This is a popular idea now with Covid numbers rising again. A small celebration with your family or closest friends is a safe way to celebrate. This is also ideal for first or second birthday parties. The younger kiddos don’t really understand the concept of a birthday party so keep it small.
*Birthday Scavenger Hunt
This idea does take some planning and prep, but create a scavenger hunt with all of your birthday boy’s favorite items and places. It will be tailored uniquely to him, hitting his favorites. This could be a great family activity, or one for he and his best friend, depending on their ages.
*Plan an Experience
Create a special day for your birthday girl by planning an experience. This can be for the family or her and her closest friend. For experiences, think of places you wouldn’t normally go...water parks, amusement parks, kid’s museums, zoos, laser tag or special stores. Plan a whole day of it and take her out to lunch and for a special treat after.
*Take a Trip
This is a little more extravagant for an alternative birthday celebration. However, it could be a simple night in a hotel in your town. Let’s face it, kids love staying in hotels! Or you could take a weekend trip to somewhere nearby. You could go all out, and jump on a plane to fly somewhere for a few days! Whatever road you decide to take, your kiddo will remember this alternative birthday celebration.
*Let your Birthday Kiddo Plan the Day
You might want to set a few parameters around this one, but letting your birthday boy plan the day is a fun way to celebrate. You could ask what he wants to do, places to go, where he wants to eat. It’s a fun way to incorporate some of his favorites.
*Start your Own Traditions
This is a simple idea, and it’s fun to watch your kiddos progress year after year. For example, my kids always get to choose their birthday dinner. When my son was turning four, he requested tacos, strawberries and carrots. When he turned seven, he requested steak as the main dish. He’s obviously developing an expensive palate!
Another fun birthday tradition we have is a birthday interview. When my kids were younger, it was questions like who are your best friends or what is your favorite toy, etc, a picture, a handprint and them writing their name. Now, they are a little older, but we still have questions and their handwritten name.
